Morgans honored at ribbon cutting for SU’s Centers for Excellence

Shippensburg University unveiled the new downtown location for its Centers for Excellence, located at 29 E. King Street, on April 30. A ribbon cutting ceremony marked another step in Ship’s efforts to enhance the connection between the university and the local community. The new space is now the home of the Charles H. Diller Jr. Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership and Innovation, The Mr. and Mrs. Milton K.Morgan III Makerspace and the Center for Land Use and Sustainability (CLUS).

“The relationship between the university and the community in which we live is vital, and the  SU Centers for Excellence provides greater connections between campus and the local community,” said Shippensburg University President Laurie A. Carter.

The Diller Center works to improve awareness of entrepreneurship as a career choice for students by creating an entrepreneurial ecosystem that allows members to cooperate with and participate in the entrepreneurial projects of the campus community. The center is accompanied by the new makerspace that will enhance the entrepreneurial experience and resources.

For nearly two decades, CLUS has worked to foster healthy, vibrant and sustainable communities through applied research, experiential learning opportunities for students and interdisciplinary, cross-sector partnerships. The new location provides the center greater integration into the region they serve.

Shippensburg Borough Mayor Kathy Coy was excited to welcome the centers, staff, students and faculty to the new space.

“Embracing these young students is vital for their success and our community. I welcome the centers to the downtown business district and am anxious to continue conversations on additional expansions into our community,” said Coy.

Kathryn Seaber Honored

Shippensburg University celebrated the Kathryn Huhges Seaber Raiders Academic Center for Student-Athletes (RAC) with a socially distanced ribbon cutting on April 8. The center began operating in late 2019, but a formal opening was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Located in the Ezra Lehman Memorial Library, the center serves Ship’s nearly 500 student-athletes and provides for their unique needs, including academic coaching, study hall, tutoring, learning support as well as career services and academic skill and student-athlete development workshops.  Additionally, the RAC actively collaborates with The Learning Center, the Career, Mentoring, and Professional Development Center, and other campus-wide programming.

“Though the work of this center has been going on for nearly a year, I am thrilled to have the opportunity to officially mark its significance to the campus and to our athletes. The work of the staff here at the Kathryn Hughes Seaber Raider Academic Center for Student Athletes, and of the faculty-athletic mentors are important components in ensuring our athletes’ success,” said President Lauria A. Carter

Ship’s student-athletes routinely outpace the general student body in both semester and overall cumulative QPA. The fall 2020 semester saw 40 percent of student athletes earning Dean’s list recognition and 70 percent earning at least a 3.0 GPA.

Mrs. Kathryn Hughes Seaber, for who the center is named, was in attendance at the celebration and recognized for her generosity.

“We are so appreciative that philanthropy has always been important to Kathryn Seaber and her family. Her generosity has helped make this center an attractive and welcoming space for student-athletes now and into the future. We are also grateful to Kathryn for establishing the Kathryn Hughes Seaber Educational Impact Scholarship to support students pursuing undergraduate degrees and other initiatives within the College of Education and Human Services,” said Dr. Leslie Folmer Clinton, President and CEO, Shippensburg University Foundation.

Ship Students Need Our Help

Dear Fellow Ship Alumni and Friends:

In light of current events and these uncertain times, one thing we do know is that our Ship family comes together and supports one another. In that spirit, we will get through these difficult times together.

Ship students are now transitioning to virtual delivery of their academic coursework away from the University for the remainder of the spring semester. We wish them well on what will be a new experience for many students and their amazing faculty.

As Ship alumni, we wanted to know what immediate needs students and faculty have that we could help with during this time. President Carter shared with us that the greatest need students have right now is for technology to complete the semester remotely. Students who do not have laptops and/or internet access at home need laptops and iPad hotspots which cost $750 and $350 each respectively plus $50 per month for data. It would be very helpful if we were able to secure assistance for these items. Faculty have similar equipment needs. They are also serving as “fellows” who are providing online training and remote learning support to faculty who need technical assistance.

The Shippensburg University Foundation is here to help the University garner support from alumni and friends for Shippensburg University students especially during these unexpected times. Today, please join us in making a contribution to the SU Foundation in support of student and faculty technology. We will use your support to help students who might be challenged to afford their most basic needs and access to necessary resources for remote learning and other unforeseen personal difficulties.

If you are in a position to support at this time, please click here to do so. Thank you in advance for helping us reinforce our support for the students and what it means to be a part of the Ship Family.
